Astronomers at the University of Liège have just solved a fifty-year-old stellar mystery! A study of the prototype Be star, γ Cassiopeia, provides the first direct evidence that this emission originates from a magnetic white dwarf orbiting the star. Visible to the naked eye in the constellation Cassiopeia, the star γ Cas has puzzled astrophysicists for half a century. It emits X-rays of an intensity and temperature incompatible with what one would expect from an ordinary massive star. Observatio... [4196 chars]
